I'm developing a new model of clinical reasoning as a clinical teaching tools for nursing students. I'm focusing on the two elements in the model which is cognitive and metacognitive. The problem is how do we measure those two components?
I think you need to start with logic; specifically as it has been developed in medical clinical reasoning which is totally relevant to nursing and midwifery. What do you mean by meta-congition; does that including intuition? Pattern Matching? Read Daniel Kahneman, Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow.
thank you Kathleen for your feedback. the metacognition is one of the attribute in the development of clinical reasoning skills as im looking for the reflective thinking . the intuition is also one of the attributes as described by previous studies. im not measuring the intuition because the cognition and metacognition are interrelated as described by the previous researcher. I plan to adapt the self-Regulated Learning Model (SRL) and the Outcome-Present-State-Test (OPT) model for my study.
To evaluate the metacgnición you can check the instrument created by O'Neil where he includes a test to evaluate Planning, Cognitive strategy, Self-checking, Effort and Self-efficacy. This test must be applied associated with a specific task and therefore may be relevant for your model. I evaluated the psychometric properties for each subscale and are very consistent even though it have a small number of items, so you can use them separately.
