I am investigating the behaviour of end plate connections through finite element modelling technique. And I need to subject the connection modelled in ABAQUS to cyclic loading.
I believe the key issue of determining the protocol is to obtain the yield displacement first.
Here is the procedure we have adopted in a previous research work.
1. Conduct the coupon test to obtain the yield strength of the material.
2. Assign the material property to the numerical model of the specimen and perform a monotonic analysis
3. Evaluate the results and determine the yield displacement.
4. Tabulate the protocol into the model and run a quasi-static analysis.
If you just try a numerical work, you might use the nominal yield strength of the material.
It should be noted that the essence of cyclic analysis is a simplified way to capture the seismic performance of the connection but it is not intended for completely quantify the behavior of the connection under earthquakes. I believe the loading protocol documented in the provisions can be modified if you have the rational motive.
