One of the problems in rotation cropping systems in South Africa is the poor re-establishment of annual forage legumes after the cropping (wheat or oats) phase. Is it possible for agrochemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fungicides) used in the wheat/oat cropping phase to influence the establishment of annual forage legumes planted in the pasture phase of the rotation, and if so, how?
yes it is entirely possible that pest control measures used in wheat/oats can affect the growth of a second crop. The product label will have information on the amount of time needed before planting to a different crop (the rotational crop interval).
I am dealing with several cultivars (some of which is generally used in our systems, but also some 'new' cultivars) of annual forage legumes and want to assess the effects of different agrochemicals on their persistence (i.e. seed production, self-regeneration and forage quality) within South African rotation farming systems. It has been shown that weed control in pasture/crop systems is done more effectively in the pasture phase, increasing wheat yields, and therefore, I would like to conduct field trials at several farms in the Western Cape Province of South Africa to assess whether the use of the agrochemicals used could not affect the legume seed reserves in the soil and their subsequent establishment. Are there specific protocols that need to be followed?
