How do Research Gate proceed to integrate in the reference data for publications and citations the recently published journals - for instance for the last months of 2020 and for instance Intl J Heat Mass Transfer, Intl J Heat Fluid Flows, Computers and Fluids, J. Fluid Mechanics ... and so on ?
How and after what delays and conditions do the publications and citations get into the counting of the reference data ?
I observed that certain references get included in the citation index after many years - sometimes it took some 30 years - and also even presently what's about also for taking into account in the RG software for publications and citations in the revues published let's say in october, november, december 2020 ?
RG's procedures for collecting publications and citations automatically are a mystery. Also other platforms like Google Scholar do not publish details on their procedures. RG seem to collect data from many different other platforms and databases, but the details are a secret.
Thanks, I understand better the features. But it is strange to receive several times a week a new citation reference aging some 30 years ago and to have citations in journal of international reputation that are not registered by RG some 3 months and more after it is edited in the paper version ! I have difficulty to get a perception of the use of the data procedure nevertheless. It is a secret !
RG citations are directly dependent on the uploading of the publications in RG platform. It is not like Google Scholar citations.
Indeed, citations may be added when users upload full texts to RG. But this is not the only source for citations. RG uses also others. - Unfortunately, RG is not very good in recognizing references automatically in full texts. I made some tests with uploading files. Some of the references are recognized, others not, whatever format the references have.
I guess then that the references of publications and the citation index would depend only on the uploading of the publications in the RG platform ! This could explain that for instance the citations made in a recent IJHFF , CAF or JFM or else the last months of 2020 would only be taken into account in the publications data base of the author or in the citation index of the RG members ... after the author will upload the publication in RG platform ! This would be strange and not very optimal !? I will take a look in Google Scholar, Isi Web Knowledge or SCOPUS for making the point on that !
In a former investigation, I found nevertheless that a publication that has been published with co-authors some 35 years earlier in Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics edited Baines Morton in Clarendon Press Oxford 1986 (which is very cited in the literature since then) does not show up neither in Isi Web of Knowledge neither in SCOPUS (while Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics are referred more laterly !) - neither as in the list of the publications nor in the citations - WHILE both Google Scholar and Research Gate duly refer the article for many years ! Strange, this would suggest that the investigation of publications and of the counting of the citations ... is far now from a precise scientific science ! And complementary, we can note that many committees refer to their datas either ISK ou RG and select their advices of their analyses for recruting or not and evaluating our colleages !?
Please note that also privat full-texts are used to create citation links. At the beginning of RG, it was also possible to add citations manually, and one of the citing authors had to confirm them. Later RG disabled this function. When I look at the citations of my own papers, e.g. this very old one (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/241247114), I see that several of the citing papers do not have full texts, and these are by authors who are not members of RG. Therefore, RG must have taken the citations from other sources, not from full texts available at RG.
