I suggest to read the following chapter "Gender and Leadership" In: leadership theory and practice By Peter Northouse, chapter 16.

Northouse, P. (2015). Leadership: Theory and Practice. 7th ed. London: Sage.

It will give you a very good idea on 'Leadership Labyrinth' which discusses three major issues relevant to your questions. They are Human Capital, Prejudice, and Gender Differences.
