When you want to treat wastewater effectively you must know what kind and amount of pollutants to be eliminated. Not all pollutants can be reduced in the same way. So to make the correct decision about what technology is the best for your case, you need to know the quality of wastewater to be treated and pollutants to be eliminated.

Firstly, I will analyze the physio-chemical properties of wastewater obtained from production and drilling during petroleum operations. Mainly I want to focus on trace elements and other harmful elements that present in wastewater.

And at the end of the study, I want to develop one general technique that may apply to treat that waste easily before discharge into the environment.

The wastewater or produced water in upstream production must be treated before injecting or discharge. Most of the oil and gas industry use biocide and oxygen scavenger as follows:

* Biocide needs to be injected along with the produced water, this is an anti-fouling agent of disinfectants to kill certain bacteria growth also to control sulfate-reducing bacteria, slime-forming bacteria, iron-oxidizing bacteria.

* Corrosion Inhibitor + Oxygen Scavenger Cocktail; is a chemical compound added to the produced water in the disposal wells.

However, dissolved Oxygen is a major element for corrosion, besides oxygen scavenger helps to capture dissolved oxygen in a harmless chemical reaction. This renders the oxygen unavailable for corrosive reactions.

The treatment depends on the source of waste water, either open or closed systems. In general two main components to remove from produced water; oil & solids (salts). You have to check for the allowable quantities of oil in water, Total Suspended Solids (T.S.S.), and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Then you design a system that removes both (e.g. filtration units etc..). Finally, You may have to inject chemicals like biocides & corrosion inhibitors (in Open Source systems, you include oxygen scavengers).
