I am carrying out a study and using ANCOVA as my statistical tool. All assuptions are met, but the result and covariate are both non-significant. how do i report this and what does it mean? Thank you.
If you stick with your present data set, then you would report that there was neither a significant relationship of scores on the covariate with scores on the DV, nor a significant difference in adjusted mean scores between groups on the DV. Your task would be to explain implications of this regarding whatever treatment was under investigation, and the suggestions for how this may or may not reflect on relevant theory and/or practice.
As Steven indicates, one possible explanation is low statistical power. Other explanations could include:
1. These independent variables are not notably related to the DV for your target population.
2. The measures used (covariate, DV) might be technically deficient (e.g., unreliable and/or invalid scores).
3. Some combination of these (along with the power issue).
Thank you @ Steven and @ David for your responses. it was very helpful. i think the reason is from the low statistical power. My sample was very small (n = 30). Thank you.
