I haven't done my homework yet, but will when there is time.. can anyone help with methodologies, tools they have used.. Also recommend papers where it has been done
I think it depends on how you define student engagement, and from what perspective you are examining engagement (e.g. learning, achievement, etc.) Check this link for a student engagement study http://ticonf2017.ucalgaryblogs.ca/conference/program/sessions/a-framework-for-quantifying-undergraduate-student-engagement/ Good luck!
Nastya, thank you so much. I have been working in an international collaboration for several years and have observed that the level of student engagement is higher for the same content and even the same pedagogy simply due to the international context and international teachers( who are very good). Students report in journals and conversation and presentations that they have learned more than any single class..It seems so to me, but I don't have data. I hypothesize that the context results in stronger/better learning outcomes. I'd like to make this scholarship. If you have more thoughts based on my explanation, please drop a note when you have time
Start by reading many articles (and conference presentations) on this topic. If there is a standardized test for measuring student engagement in college students, see if applies to your population (e.g., if it was developed for a residential student body at a selective liberal arts college, some items may not be appropriate for a community college with has only commuter students, open admissions, and mostly CTE programs). If you cannot find an applicable, validated, standardized measure, use multiple measures that you think are relevant for your population (e.g., retention rates, participation in clubs, extra-curricular activities, even a questionnaire based rating of student satisfaction). Use these as separate outcome measures. Do not assume that you can just add them up to form one composite scale (unless you do some rather sophisticated analysis of internal reliability and sub factors).
