I synthesized a linear and random copolymer of vinyl alcohol and vinyl methyl ether. I would like to quantify the presence of OH group and OCH3 group in my copolymer. I used H-NMR in DMSO-d6 but it did not work well. The OCH3 peak was overlapped by a water peak. Can anyone suggest other methods? Thank you.
Writing from memory, some years ago the pharmacopeias rejected NMR methods for the degree of alkylation of cellulose ethers because accuracy or precision did not meet requirements. As far as I know from the wrong side of the paywall they still specify a method derived from a classical one involving reaction with HI.

Classical methods for alkoxyl and hydroxyl functions are described in 'Quantitative Organic Analysis via functional groups', S. Siggia & J. G. Hanna, Krieger, 1978. I have the 4th edition of 1988. Despite the date, this comprehensive work didn't yet make contact with developments in instrumental "finishes", particularly chromatographic methods. Analysts, particularly pharmaceutical analysts, may sometimes seem old-fashioned, but this old chemistry is occasionally of more than historical interest.
