We have a laser cut polystyrene plate we're looking to use for enzymatic assays and immunoassays. The untreated plate is currently hydrophobic - and the primary suggestions for making it hydrophilic are plasma treatments.
I am hoping to use a less expensive method - is there some chemical treatments we can use? Ideally one that would be stable long term (12 months or so).

There are nonbinding surface (NBS) polystyrene microplates that are commercially available. Unfortunately, I don't know what the process is for making the surface nonbinding.
When I want to prevent enzymes from sticking to the surface of standard polystyrene microplates, I include 0.01% Triton X-100 or similar nonionic detergent in the assay buffer. The hydrophobic part of the detergent sticks to the plastic, leaving the hydrophilic part exposed to the medium.

You can treat your plate with 30% ammonium persulfate at 80C for 6 h with subsequent treatment with 1M NaOH it will lead to introduction of -COOH groups on a surface of plate.
I have found this protocol in the attached article Tkachov et all 2006, but it is in Russian:)
