I am looking for software/tools that help to decide the most suitable orientation of the building for an architect or an engineer. Preferably that which is integrated with some basic building modeling software like REVIT or Sketchup.
Also please specify the level of expertise required to use the software.

I think ecoTect is a good one and it is also from Autodesk like Revit. Thus, you can input Revit model into it. A bit complex to use but there are tutorials for you to learn how to use from basic to advanced levels. In my opinion there are two important issues: one is the building itself and its architecture, two is the site, where you put the building and how you do it.. - most of the available software (sketchup, archicad, autocad, revit etc.. )allow for propoer sunlight simulation
For your objective you can use simulation software which allow you to do Day lighting, thermal load, Natural ventilation and window to wall ratio optimization. For the same you can use TRNSYS and software's mentioned in above answers. Also you must keep in mind that desired rotation/orientation of building is not possible in most of the cases because of Land availability constraint. So the best way is to try to play with the space arrangement based on its use during time of the day like bed rooms, Living room, Veranda and so on(most of the cases this approach is most effective to enhance thermal comfort in built space).

I’m using ECOTECT of Autodesk in order to simulate the shading effect of photovoltaic panels inside a greenhouse (insolation and daylight analysis). The software is able to import geometric models from most common CAD software. It seems to be a good compromise between accuracy of results and simplicity of use. You can download the educational version from autodesk.com.
I do agree with S.Castellano. ECOTECT is a potential tool for your purpose.
