Our group is studying how to improve the fuel properties of charcoal produced by slow pyrolysis. I found this one paper that calculated the combustibility index (S) from charcoal samples: this equation comprises parameters such as ignition and burnout temperature, average mass loss rate and maximum mass loss rate (10.1016/j.applthermaleng.2015.08.064). I am wondering how do we measure the last two parameters (average mass loss rate and maximum loss rate).
I also have DTGs for the samples I want to check their combustibility index.

Actually, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is an analytical technique used to determine a material's thermal stability and its fraction of volatile components by monitoring the weight change that occurs as a sample is heated at a constant rate.
For analysis of any material you can check the model by making simulative circuit on ETAP and can check its properties by changing the temperature at different stages.

From the TGA vs temperature changes curve, it could be determined maximum and average of mass loss as appeared values. The constant rate of heating is also necessary.
