I want to plot air parcel trajectory pattern for June-1997; June-2002 and June-2014 in one plot. Using Hysplit, is it possible to compile the trajectories from several months in one plot?
Yeah its tedious but you can do that. The way you run the HYSPLIT traj. model, you run it. At the last stage where you download the gif or pdf file and save it, you need to click on :Trajectory endpoints file". It will show you a text file save it and take the last III and IV column data in xl/sigma/origin and plot it thats simple. Basically III and IV columns show lat long of the back air-parcel.
So you keep saving for each day this type of txt file and finally you can make one plot with all the trajectories on it.
You also have a better way of combining hysplit trajectories for several months by using Trajstat software where you can give the global meteorological data as input and get trajectories of your choice on a monthly basis and just combine them for as many months as you want. Pls let me know if you require any other help?
An alternate method is that through the PC (or Apple) version of HYSPLIT, in the GUI, you can create a month's worth of trajectories at a time, make a file listing all the trajectory file names, then do the plot, pointing to that list of filenames.
See the Frequency Analysis section of the HYSPLIT Tutorial at http://www.ready.noaa.gov/documents/Tutorial/html/index.html. You don't need to run the frequency program, but this section explains how to run a month's worth of trajectories and make the file "INFILE". Then you just plot with the INFILE instead of a tdump file.
The PC/Apple versions come with template batch files/scripts for looping through dates/times, and doing the plot. C:\hysplit4\examples\scripts.
PC/Mac version available from http://www.ready.noaa.gov/HYSPLIT.php
If there are more questions please post to the HYSPLIT forum at https://hysplitbbs.arl.noaa.gov/
I need some help. How do I download a data for a year to enable me running a backwards trajectory? I am told that I need some programming skills to download the data. Please help if you have Idea.
