I need a clear explanation of the parameters of the heat release rate calculation equation for a turbocharged diesel engine. Do I need in-cylinder volume for every crank angle degree? Can anyone help me in this regard? Is there any available matlab code for engine HRR calculation?
I suggest to read İnt. Com. Eng. by Heywood or any articles about hrr caluculation . You have to get the data from in-line pressure and crank angle position. On the other hand, you can do this easily with a combustion programme such as AVL indicom, kistler ki-box etc.
Lab-View engine software is best suitable to measure in cylinder pressure. to calculate manually you need cylinder volume at every crank angle. pl go through heywood text book
Adding to above suggested ways you can use Webbe's model to model combustion and inturn hear release. This won't even require p-theta, few simpler inputs like 50% combustion point (crank angle) and duration of combustion (10 - 90%) will do. This approach is used by all canned packages AVL Boost, WAVE if am not mistaken.
There is a very good overview of cylinder pressure and crank-angle data collection and analysis for heat release calculations by Bueno et al. located at the attached link. In the past I used a version of the Krieger-Borman heat-release with a fourier transform to smooth the cylinder pressure data and use of fuel properties and other measured parameters to iteratively solve for heat transfer. The code I used was originally written in Fortran by Gary L. Borman, Robert E. Bair, John VanGerpen and Dale R. Tree while they were at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I made minor modifications within the code to account for the oxygenated fuels that were part of my research at the time. I don't own the rights to the source code so I cannot share it but the approach taken was quite sound, is used in some commercially available code and might also be available from others as open-source. Bueno et al. also provide a description of dynamic measurement of TDC in the linked chapter. TDC error can be a quite a problem and dynamic measurement of TDC (i.e., while motoring the engine or with firing disabled on the instrumented cylinder) is the only effective method that I have found to deal with the issue.

It can be calculated from Hohensberg relation using pressure and crank angle data. Hohensberg relation uses the instantaneous cylinder volume . Whereas Annand equation uses thermal conductivity of the gas and viscosity of combustion products. Hohensberg equation results into more accurate results.

Just example of an engine which is in HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion mode can operate under variable conditions. The fuel/air equivalence ratio, engine speed and EGR range are the three main operating factors that affect HCCI engine performance and therefore the HRR associated with each set of operating conditions. There may be a cause-effect relationship between the four parameters (θp(Duration of the energy release (radians), Mp, Mpp(Mp Shape factors, Mpp the opposite of the original Wiebe function) ) and Qp(Heat release in HCCI combustion mode (J) of the HRR shape and magnitude and this parameter evolves as a gain control of HRR. Double-Wiebe function can be used along with parameters for HRR calculation.

HRR is the rate of generation of fire and simulation, modelling, hohensberg relation using first law of thermodynamics is quite adaptable for calculation of cylinder volume, charge temperature, drop in heat, gross heat release etc. Duration of combustion, heat release, entropy change, engine speed and heat transfer to cylinder walls are couple of important parameters.
