Two formula are available in literature to calculate F/M ratio such as QS0/VX and Q(S0-Se) / VX
Which one is correct?
Re Food to Microorganism Ration in Sludge Treatment
Food to microorganism ratio with introduction of influence substrate in system:
(1) F/M = Q(S0 - Se) / VX
Food to microorganism ratio REMOVAL of influence from system:
(2) F/M = QS0 / VX
BOTH are one and the same (correct) but under different conditions. See UO_ch17 article attached. Cheers.

Prof Louangrath is correct. Both
You can also find the Q(S0 - Se) / VX formula describing SUR (substrate utilization rate) which may be significantly different compered to F/M ratio, when the treatment plant operates poorly.
Dear Sir,
Logically case I is true, but when we design the STP for total BOD
Kg BOD per day entering the aeration tanks divided by kg MLSS in aeration tanks.
Variations include using VMLSS and also correcting for any MLSS in final clarifiers.
F/M= Q* (BOD)/ (V* (MLSS))
where F/M = food to microorganism ratio, grams of BOD per day per gram of MLSS
Q = wastewater flow, m3/d
BOD = wastewater BOD, g/m3
V= liquid volume of aeration tank, m3
MLSS = mixed liquor suspended solids, g/m3
Thank you for all, really it's valuable discussion for me
Dear
Prof Paul Louangrath,
which formula should be used in case of batch process?
kindly any give suggestion
