I have a DAT file with no XY coordinates, just the value field (see attached DAT file). Suppose I was given the boundaries of the DAT file, as well as the supposed resolution (say 20m), how do I add XY coordinates to all records of the file? Is it done purely manually, or is there some other way to do it?

if you could use Matlab for this job, this task is solved quite quickly. I assume that your data are in some kind of Matrix format. If you load your datafile into matlab the data are stored in a variable, lets call it 'data'. You can use the reshape command to get a Matrix (you will have to set the right dimensions):
Z=reshape(data(1:1000),10,100);
define you coordinate system:
x=0:20:20*100-20;
y=0:20:180;
and mesh these vectors such that each datapoint in Z has a X and Y coordinate:
[X,Y]=meshgrid(x,y);
now there are nice plotting options in Matlab. To get your dat file in columns, you can save the data as:
dlmwrite('test.dat',[X(:),Y(:),B(:)],'delimiter',' ','precision',5,'newline','pc')
>> you may want to adopt the format settings.
However, there should be many ways, but a manual approach for 576651 datapoints is not much fun I guess.

Unfortunately, I do not have MatLab installed, and as much as possible I certainly do not want to type in coordinates manually for 51 .dat files with 6,000,000+ lines each. :(

Recently, I have been provided with the XY coordinates for all the .dat files, so I just had to copy them into their respective files.
That being said, the problem is solved.
