Dear All,

now my group is working mainly on lotic mountain basins. I’m interesting in opinion of hydroecologists on a concept of ecological group of periphyton in biotopes of pebble in streams, small rivers (creeks). Benthic and periphytic communities mainly differ by number of dimensions in area inhabited by animals and plants. So, if only two – surface of bottom is periphyton, and if vertical dimension appear except of horizontal is benthic. But it is too simplified approach.  What about size of organisms? If surface of stone is small, so for protists and microinvertebrates it can be periphyton. But for bottom crayfish it will be benthos! Will be glad to see wide points of view.

Andrey
