if it's a diode, and you plot the relationship on a log scale, then the slope tells you the ideality factor of the diode.

Adding to Thomas curve fitting helps estimating the diode model parameters of the solar cell. In the sense, if the I-V characteristics can be modeled by the one diode model equation one can determine the the dat current parameters such as the reverse saturation current I0, the ideality factor of the diode n. the series resistance of the diode and the shunt resistance of the solar cell.
it is so if the reverse saturation current is too large, this is a symptom of high recombination rate and consequently short life time of minority carriers.Then the dark current losses will be high and the conversion efficiency will be low.
If the series resistance is too large the fill factor will be lower This points out high resistance of the the hole and electron transport layers. Rs may be also nonlinear pointing out the existence of nonlinear interfaces between the the transport layers and the active absorber material.
The too small shunting resistance points the out the presence of leakage currents from the anode to the cathode. This may be due to the existence of pinholes and voids in the between the two electrodes among the organic layers.

Curve fitting is indeed very helpful in to determine the diode model parameters of the solar cell. I do agree with both of them.
