I'm going to design a system for the grocery stores to detect the birth date of the customers automatically from their identification card. We have a scanner (camera). My question is how we can detect just the date on the image.The direction of image might be varied. could you please introduce a good guide to me?
It may be a lot easier to use RFID in this project unless the requirement is that the card must be recognized from a long distance. Readers are available to get the RFID out of the card and put it into a file. You can search under "RFID reader" or "NFC reader".
Thank you C.P. Ravikumar for your suggestion, but unfortunately RFID tags are not embedded in ID cards.
I think I should explain this case more. In many countries there is a prohibition on selling cigarette to under legal age people. Our ID cards don't have RFID tag yet. So, the grocery stores need an electronic device to read the birth date of the customer printed on their ID card and calculate their age and display to the clerk or electronically decide whether to sell cigarette or not. I think we have to use a camera and do image processing. I want to know which image processing techniques and processors are suitable for this application. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
Reading text from an image could be performed as follows:
1. Find the position & orientation of the ID card and the text field containing the birth date in the image. Segmentation should be easier if you the ID card is surrounded by a uniform background. OpenCV's findContours function might help here.
2. After the position & orientation of the text field is retrieved, perform OCR (text extraction) on this field; depending on the library used for OCR, you might have to de-rotate the part of the image containing the text field (can also be done using OpenCV, see http://felix.abecassis.me/2011/10/opencv-rotation-deskewing/) .
