I have been trying to model grouted sleeve connections in offshore industry using concrete damage plasticity model. I could match the FEA with test results in terms of load-displacement curve up to the peak. But after that, my FEA load would keep increase. So I checked the stress level in the grout. I found that the stresses were still up to 40MPa but the compressive damage hadreached 0.98 already.
I was wondering if there is an issue with element type in your model. When you are using continuum brick element without reduced integration, you should check the maximum damage ratio, sometimes it can be greater than unity. If it does, then you need to fix it. On the other hand, when you are using reduced integration, hourglass effect may be the case due to coarse mesh being assigned to the model. However, it would be difficult to answer your question if detailed information regarding modelling tecnique is not provided.
Hi, Dr. Tambusay. Thank you for your answer. Yes, I did found that if I use C3D8I element, the damage values will be larger than 1.0. However, if I look at the integration points, the values are still less than 1.0. Also C3D8I and C3D8R are giving me more or less the same results. The only difference is that C3D8I can produce a smoother load-displacement curve. I will update my questions later to see whether you have any further suggestions. Thank you again.
