I am working on some new composition where I want to find the compound is explosive or not.I am using TG-DSC but from that how can I predict the composition is explosive or not?
Maybe you want to check this somewhat related discussion: https://www.researchgate.net/post/How_do_I_measure_or_study_the_explosive_potential_of_any_compound_esp_organic_peroxides
Thank you for your question. To answer this question is difficult because this topic is very complex. If you ask for a first screening you should look to the “Screening Procedures” of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Appendix 6 (https://www.unece.org/trans/areas-of-work/dangerous-goods/legal-instruments-and-recommendations/un-manual-of-tests-and-criteria/rev6-files.html).
Generally speaking a substance can have explosive properties because of its chemical composition. You can define different substance classes with common structural features which might show explosive properties.
The DSC is good for a first screening, because it shows the decomposition energy of the substance. But I strictly suggest to measure it in a closed cell. Therefore TG is not a god choice for the investigation of explosive properties.
