By integrating sustainability principles and practices across disciplines, we can inspire students to become environmentally conscious and socially responsible leaders
Sustainability is an inextricable part of environmental literacy for young learners. A number of methods maybe applied to interest and inspire students into becoming better informed, encourage more responsible behaviour and ultimately make informed decisions (now and in adulthood) about responsible, sustainable eco-friendly solutions to their environments. The use of theme-park model centers (such as the Marints Kundskapcentre, Malmo or 2-Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town) are two good ocean-themed examples. Younger students might also appreciate story-telling methods through the use of cartoons or televised series on environmental consciousness. Lastly, exchange programs for students living in different environmental settings, may inspire more holistic understanding of the whole "world-around-us" concept (mountains, to valleys, to seas).
Ocean/Environmental literacy, is critical in creating socially responsible leaders by ensuring students have the opportunity to make personal connections with nature.
Sustainability is the most difficult action that everyone of us experience due to different factors that may interfere. For me, in order to promote effective sustainability in curriculum innovation, is to provide teachers a non toxic environment to work on,like non-toxic school head,a school head that will lead teachers to do better, not a school head that is just keep on nagging to do this and to do that without even giving a clear instruction on how to do it. Also, lessen the workloads of the teachers,so that they can focus on making innovations that can be used in the teaching learning process. When the teacher is not overworked, teacher will performed well and teachers can greatly contribute in effectively sustaining curriculum innovation.
See Sustainable Learning and Education (SLE) concepts. Trends in curriculum delivery methods such as the competency based and the outcomes base curriculum are heading to the Inquiry based curriculum where competencies essential to learners for the current global markets are consulted from industry experts the formation and or creation of Industry Advisory Council and or Board be considered. Invest in teacher training with technology updates and keeping abreast to market competency and technology changes that can and should be integrated to the curriculum. A Flexible and adaptive curriculum and should be considered.
