Human trafficking is an infringement of a persons right, however one of the ways we can end human trafficking is the institutions of state be strengthened. Most of the countries were girls are trafficked from are often refereed as weak or failing state. The civil society which is the third sector of state need to start advocating, create awareness and educating the citizens. Furthermore they (civil society) has to engage the state through policy suggestions and capacity building in technical areas that the state will need assistance. International organisations such as World bank and United Nations should invest in rural development, because most of the girls being trafficked come from rural areas in developing countries that development in terms of education is on the minimal.

Unfortunately there seems to be no interest in this topic which refers to violations of human rights, rape, sexual violance and so forth.

I understand the reason the first response mentioned weak or failed states, but the recent report on slavery from the UN highlighted the fact this is clearly a problem in developed nations as well. While the world is understandably appalled by the plight of the Nigerian girls, the media attention on Nigeria allowed well-intended people in the US off the hook to "point out the speck" in Nigeria's eye while conveniently overlooking the plan in our own eye.

As anthropologist, I observed the good impact of several Communication for Development project based on the use of the ICT. Actually, I am working with other developers on a Mobile for Development (M4D) App and I think that it could be a complementary strategy that can contribute in a concrete way to stop the injustice.

In fact, there is a growing interest for Mobile Apps focused on "bottom-up" social change. Several International Development Agencies at national level (USAID) intergovernmental (FAO, ASEAN) or non-governmental (IUCN) has been partnering several projects using mobiles: 

o mWater (to facilitate the social water monitoring)

o WildScan (to help combat illegal wildlife trade in Asia)

o MediCapt (to help clinicians document and preserve forensic medical evidence of sexual violence and to support the local prosecution of these crimes)

o DOTsync (to help the Myanmar’s battle against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis - MDR-TB).

I think that this kind of App could contribute to detect, fight and -eventually- prevent the plague of the human trafficking.

Maurizio that’s amazing, using technology to combat human trafficking, namely sexual slavery, abuse and for servitude etc. instead what we have been seeing, eg, cyberspace, illegal exploitation and abuse of technology by organized crime. Indeed ICTs need to be monitored so as to minimize the risk of using technology for illegal activities.

In fact, I think that the question about the double opportunity offered by ICT tools (for legal or illegal uses) is strictly linked with another topic: the "moral capital" -to paraphrase Bordieu- of the users.

As we know, for indeed, a tool as Google Maps could be used by both Boko Haram soldiers (to prepare their genocidal actions) and by Greenpeace activists (to fight against deforestation)! Same tool but different moral capital...

Anyway, generally, M4D software and applications offer a "bottom-up" and open solution focused to users disposing of a moral capital more oriented to make visible a problem, to safely denounce the injustice, and to report to wider audiences.

Obviously, in a fragile "oil" democracy as Nigeria, M4D will never be the "total solution". It could be an useful tool, but the real problem is the same structure of the State, governed by a deeply chauvinist and sexist elite which over the years has been permitting the diffusion of a radical culture, both in rural and urban regions. A situation that has been facilitated by the shortsightedness of the international community (intergovernmental agencies and NGOs) and by the greed of transnational oil corporations.

But this is only my humble opinion...

Trafficking is a crime and it depends on Empathy, care and culture existing in the society.

In reality it is difficult to answer as the demand is increasing towards commodification of body (external use & for internal organs).

The NGO that is closest to my heart is called EASEL School. Their website is www.easelschoolcambodia.com Easel School focuses on providing free education to impoverished youth in several small villages along the Thai border in Cambodia.  This area is ripe for traffickers as there are many migrants that want to cross the border to Thailand for work. I am drawn to NGOs that work more toward prevention of human trafficking because in my mind, human trafficking will persist as long as there are large numbers of very vulnerable people around the world.  We certainly cannot stop pedophiles from being predators, or sex tourists from travelling around the world searching for sex.  We can do investigative approaches, but these have proven to be very ineffective at addressing the root issues.  Organizations like the IJM do a lot of this kind of work where they rescue people, kick in doors and pull out people.  We have seen that the traffickers just go back to the same small village and tell the family that they still owe money and need to provide another person to work off the debt. Or they go to another village full of vulnerable people and get more people to stock the brothel, or sweatshop, or whatever.  

In Southeast Asia there are many NGOs and some are very good. For instance, FACE in Thailand works on the court and advocacy side, supporting survivors of trafficking through the court process, advocating for them and guiding them through the process of testifying in court.  This process can take years and these survivors are often limited to living in a immigrant detention center or Baan Kredtrakarn or some other shelter that to them feels like being in prison.  They can't earn money to support their families and are in limbo in a sense.

Another great one is Population Deavelopment Association PDA in Bangkok who also has the Cabbages and Condoms restaurants and the Birds and Bees resort.  A very interesting organization with an extensive history.

CPDC and ATCC in Pattaya are amazing shelters that serve children who are survivors of trafficking, street kids who are often addicted to a variety of drugs, child prostitutes, child laborers and the like.  

In Northern Thailand, DEPDC and their Half-Day School serves hill tribe and kids from Burma who are undocumented.  Baan Nana Childlife Center is a shelter, school and an agriculture center serving street children in Mae Sai, the Northernmost city in Thailand.  Both have facebook pages.

All of these are worth your time and do real grassroots work helping actual human beings. Although some larger NGOs and INGOs do good work, some don't.  Much of the money that goes in the lion's share of these organizations is wasted on salaries of upper management and they can rarely illustrate what concrete work they do, what impact they are having on the lives of real people beyond having meetings with other organizations like themselves and doing more fundraising.  (obviously I am not going to name names)
