Funding for mental health care in general has been severely slashed in recent years. As a result, individuals like Jared Lee Loughner, James Holmes, Adam Lanza, and other individuals with severe mental health issues decompensate psychologically to the point where they commit mass shootings. These gunmen could have benefited from receiving greater psychiatric and psychological care. There were no changes in policy following the Tucson shooting of Gabrielle Giffords or the shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater. Now that another disaster has struck an elementary school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, what can we do to put pressure on our elected officials to increase funding for and access to mental health care? One thing I've done is start a petition on the White House petition website (http://wh.gov/RAqH) and on Monday I will call the offices of my representative and senators, but I am hopeful that people can think of additional ways to approach this.
