Cellulose is normally crystalline in nature. I need to reduce the crystalline nature of cellulose extraced from natural fiber so that its thermal conductivity gets reduced.
Crystallinity index of Cellulose (more specifically, cellulose nano crystals) start to decrease at 200 C, however it will be decomposed at higher tempertature (~350-400 C) to form completely amorphous (possibly formation of carbon dot suggested by some papers). Also you'll see the cellulose will turn into black upon heating (mostly above 120 C).
Some ionic liquids have been used as for the pre-treatment of cellulosic fibres to reduce the crystallinity, which is beneficial for the following enzymatic hydrolysis.
Crystallinity of cellulose extracted from natural fibers, factors changing it, and its relation to reactivity are discussed in the below mentioned articles. Happy new year.
