Microbial production of hydrogen is catching up very fast. A very real possibility. Lot of information on the development of the sustainable technology are out there. To cite a few
Today, mainly, hydrogen is produced by reforming natural gas, or, in a more reduced scale, by electrolysis (alkaline electrolysis, mainly).
In the medium term, large electrolyzers (including not only alkaline, but also PEM technologies) are going to play an important role, since their prices are going down, and because they can be easily integrated with renewable power sources (wind, PV).
In the long term, large amounts of hydrogen will be produced via thermal energy (used in thermochemical cycles, or for water-splitting). This thermal energy will came from solar or nuclear.
