I have calculated IVI (Importance value index) of trees by adding relative frequency, density and dominance. For grasses i have used abundance instead of dominance. Am i doing the right?
See the following paper dealt with crop communities. Abundance is not equal to dominance...Think you should use equivalent methodology for all communities
Yes, dominance is not equal to abundance. It would be better to use canopy cover of grasses. I will advice you to refer two books on the subject. 1. Fundamentals of Ecology by E.P. Odum and 2. field Biology and Ecology by Smith. If you get an other book titled Research methods in plant ecology by Pandeya, Puri and Singh will be better as they have described how to estimate IVI in grassland.
I suggest you add other parameters such as use (economic value). Certain species have commercial value while others have limited value. We use such approach in rangeland assessment (rangeland value index) where forage species with high nutritive value (CP) get higher rating.
