To conduct a study on the impact of industry clusters on the performance of clustering firms, we must first identify those clusters. I wonder if the techniques of spatial econometrics enables me this identification knowing that I'm interested in the innovative capacity of clustering firmes.
I would say that spatial econometrics rather allows you for identification of interactions between 'objects' which are located apart. Spatial econometrics rather answers the question whether is things happening in, say, country A affect what is happening in country B. If you wish to find clusters, why not to try 'tradutional' clustering techniques, liek e.g. agglomerations, or k-means clustering. Best, Ewa
Yes as Ewa has mentioned, spatial econometrics is mainly used for studies involving spatial autocorrelation and the like as when traditional econometrics is married to spatial variables. I would recommend looking into Zipf law and the estimation of some related power law relationships for the dispersion of spatial entities. For instance when it is used to describe the spatial structure of cities. Cities being a kind of "spatial cluster." The industrial economics framework (not too technical) for firm/industry-based analysis is Michael Porter's work on "location matters". Also consider the early work by Torsten Haagerstrand on the "spatial diffusion of innovations", if that is what you mean by "capacity"

I presume that you need an idea of spatial econometrics first.
Spatial model is a model where you want to allow for spatial dependence between the entities in the study (say, firms). The presence of spatial dependence between firms could explain the relative locational effect effect of the firms (clustering) which might influence firm's performance.

From a slightly different perspective you may also want to try to analyse the presence of hot-spots in your spatial data by using some weighted density method.
