Korean poet Jang will write a new poem on nursing care or nurses (maybe, based on his caring experience for his mother) and send it to me soon. I and American poet will translate it out of Korean into English. I am hoping that the poem will be published in the International Nursing Review (which is an official journal from the International Council of Nurses) and recognized and disseminated to the global nurse community per every International Nurses Day (May. 12). So far, any nurse association or council has never promoted such a literary work related to nursing care. As you know very well, nursing shortage is now serious, even globally. Our work (poem) may be able to inspire the nursing profession in a significant, positive way as a social contribution. Like that, I serve as a nurse scientist as well as a nurse.

Saadi Shirazi was one of the prominent and greatest Iranian poets of the medieval period. His famous poem can guide humans to be kind and kindness is the corner stone of nursing. He has described the concept of empathy in a meaningful and artistic sense that if one human being is suffered, it is like that all people in the world will be suffered. The English translation of this poem is as below:

Humans (Children of Adam) are inherent parts (or more literally, limbs) of one body, and are from the same valuable essence (or more literally, gem) in their creation. When the conditions of the time hurt one of these parts, other parts will be disturbed. If you are indifferent about the misery of others, it may not be appropriate to call you a human being.

Nursing is a human giving quality and if this fact is a drive to give quality or restore health to others. Its one point f my passion as a nurse. Restore health is restoration of autonomous state to the one who has lost it temporally or palliative methods in case of chronical healthcare.

Absolutely Yes. Because Nursing is an ability to make connections with people in meaningful ways. And The exact motivation occurs when we help people without expecting any reward. And we not only do our nursing duties but we also teach people how to respect their health!

Is thier is good satistfication that will lead to empathic motivition

Human rights are worth empathetic motivation. Health is a human right. Every ONG is trying to help in either way due empathetic motivation which makes a self-realization or satisfaction

At this moment no. We are underpaid and understaffed. There is more and more work piled on top of us with no support from management who only care about bed availability and getting patients moved. We are undervalued by our employer and the population show less and less respect for what we do. It is not an easy time to be a nurse.

Vocation is one of the self motives to drive a start. Or what religious people term it a a first love. The first thing one had loved. The first spark of own desires. If nursing is vocational, and not money or category aided prestige, one has to make the spark burning. I had an experience of teaching before I shifted the career. And I found my world in nursing full of satisfaction and self realization despite tyranny environments and conditioned in human resources which might lead to burn out.

We are NURSEs. Although I'm agree with you, but I think beyond this issue of not getting paid or something like this, we need to pay more attention to people's lives. we must be the best of ourselves so that we would be able to desire more attention.

Firstly I need to let you know I love my job and could never imagine working anywhere else, could never imagine not caring for others and giving my all each and every day I am in work.

I have to agree with you, we do need to pay more attention to people's lives, ourselves, our colleagues and our families included. Just stating that we are nurses does not mean we should be silent and conform to the outdated idea that to be a nurse you should not complain. That a nurse who complains is a bad nurse. That a nurse who complains is not amazing at their job. That a nurse who complains can not possibly care for their patients because this may be what is fundamentally wrong with how nurses in the NHS are treated, if may be the underlying rot that is destroying nursing within the NHS.

The situation where I work has become toxic, hence my opinion.

When nurses are using food banks because they can't afford to feed their family and pay their basic bills there is a problem. This is WHY I mentioned pay and I'm sure we all know that noone goes into nursing if they want to be paid well.

There is a high expectation on nurses, with most placed in pedastels, but Nurses are only human. When nurses go home crying nearly everyday from exhaustion, demoralised by both management and the public, is it not to be expected that we become jaded with our jobs? Are we not allowed to wish for better?

The people I work with a more than a better version of themselves, they are amazing, and especially so when, and despite of the pressures we are under, do an amazing job with compassion and empathy to the fore, but our compassion and empathy, our desire to care should not be used against us, should not be used as a tool to make us feel bad for wanting our basic human rights, to make us feel bad for wanting fair pay and it most definately should not be used to make us feel like bad nurses, because that is, without a shadow of a doubt, what we most definately are not.

It is hoped in this time of healthcare crisis that we can gain support from our nursing colleagues both near and far though, unfortunately, I know this is not guaranteed as there are those both within our profession and ourside who believe it is better to pull down and criticise their colleagues/nurses rathar than show support, maybe in the hope that others believe that they are the better person, a stronger nurse, that they would do the job better because they wouldn't complain, that regardless of everything stacked against them that they would be a 'proper' nurse.

My hope in sharing, not only my opinion but many others, is to try and make a difference for not only staff but the patients we care for.

With hope that those who regard compassion and understanding the highest of qualities understand that these qualities can also be shown to those we work with, and ourselves, to ensure the best of everyone is able to develop.

I'm sorry I don't understand your meaning when you are talking about desiring attention so I am unable to reply to this.

My decision to be a nurse was for vocation to be a health professional and my role model, my mother supervising nurse.

The motivation during my professional career until today, are the patients, their smile or receive a thank you and the personal satisfaction of having contributed to their well-being.

Remembering; It has not been easy: Day or night, even on holidays, with some illness because we also get sick and still, we went to work for the responsibility of caring for patients.

Like all professionals, we want to be paid back with a fair economic payment to our work and perhaps in many places it is not. Many times the ratio of the number of patients per nurse is not adequate, we serve more patients and we also solve the lack of supplies to provide the best care.

In addition to the gratitude of our patients, we need the recognition of our authorities as the head nurse and the managers of the institution. I have been a general nurse and also the head nurse of a Public Hospital and a Private Clinic and I think we should guide young nurses so that they always acquire knowledge that is the basis of excellent care. Motivate them to be leaders, to manifest their ideas to achieve changes in their institutions; to improve the situation of nurses and to make our profession better visible in society.

The Nurse in giving attention feels many emotions! we have the opportunity to care for patients at all stages of their lives. For example, it is surprising to care for a newborn and share the joy of a new life. We apply medicines that cause pain like vaccines, we look at the face of a sad mother because of the baby's cry and at the same time she grateful that her child will not get sick. The wonderful thing about participating in cardiac surgeries and seeing how a heart stops and after long hours of work by the health team, we observed the heart of our patient that beats vigorously and we thought ... we were part of it!

The stress that we can feel when we provide assistance in emergency or intensive care services to patients who are so sensitive that they need an effective and timely treatment, with constant control and after a long day; The nurse feels great satisfaction with the recovery of patients, but sometimes she must face difficult moments such as caring for the patient in the last stage of her life.

After so many emotions; Now in my community, I mainly do promotional preventive care to improve their lifestyles and therefore, their health.

To the nurses who lose some motivation at some point, I suggest: REMEMBER! and they get feedback with the valuable work they do each day, with the emotions they have experienced in caring, receiving the smiles and thanks of their patients.

As a newly qualified nurse I really struggled to find part time/flexible work which would allow me to study my current masters degree but still receive the necessary support on the job. This was a huge shame considering I actually had a lot more free time than i thought. I am itching to get started with my nursing career once I have completed further study!

I think I havt done what I pledged to do for the people that I care for. I still have room to make a difference. If I make them smile, of which they would not have been be able to do before my presence, then I’m paid for my job. I stay motivated because I’ve got to keep doing this over and over again. Trying different methods depending on the individual. For those who are depressed already, I try harder and they drain me much. But I know my presence makes a difference for them mentally, socially, spiritually and financially.

I totally agree with you about not getting paid. But during the years that I worked, I saw many nurses not working enough because they had the idea that they are not getting enough salary. Sorry for my disagreement reply. In a glance, I just thought that it would be that way of thinking. That's why I mentioned we have to pay attention to people's health till we may be able to desire more salary.

Maybe it was a misunderstanding that I did not get your point clearly last time. But now I agree with you that despite of the fact that nurses are working without stopping, they must have more attention. But like I said, I hope we never get to a place to think about not working properly because we are not getting enough money.

And of course, I'm agree that our voice must be heard!!!

Currently i can observe and hear psychiatry nurses act and discuss the ability to keep active, interact, motivate and treat thier patients in a delicate manner. With all the difficulties that alines to a psychiatry patient. This even motivate the new nurses. The human support required by others and we are able to give them, empowering them, promoting them and seeing them arise is a motive for efforts done. This motivates for a new trial every time. Thanks for sharing a such brightening idea.

Psych Nursing is what I wanted straight out of nursing school. And I loved it! I worked with kids in an RTC and the program was absolutely terrible. But the people, RNs, MHTs etc were awesome! And that kept me motivated. When I left my first job of 5 years I went to a nonprofit organization and clinic. I was the MAT nurse case manager and I worked as float in the clinic too. We were chronic disease specialist clinic, HIV, HepC, Diabetes and generally primary care as well. I used more psych skills at this clinic than I ever did working specifically in mental health. I saw EVERYTHING there. We cared for underserved populations of all types. LGBT, HIV, homeless, severe mental illness, refugees, uninsured, underinsured etc. It was a game changer for me. I felt needed! The patients were so grateful for the care we gave and we love them. I ran the opiate addiction recovery program, or medication assisted treatment. I advocated for them in court, helped them find new jobs, new homes it was incredible. I now work with the state as a care coordinator(very boring) but I am finishing my MSN in Informatics so the boring job will do for now. My degree is opening doors and opportunities to an endless amount of possible jobs. That is what I love so much about being a Nurse. There are so many opportunities to work in so many different areas of medicine and nursing. You can find joy and passion in areas you never thought and for me right now that is Nursing Informatics, Health Information systems and technology is the future of medicine.

Nursing is a very hard profession and needs only "LOVE TO HUMANITY" as a motivation.

I enjoyed my 33 years as a bedside nurse in critical care and my motivation was caring for the patient and doing a good job so that they lived through my shift.

My motivation is my mother. She had become sick a few years back and I realized that I did not know enough to help her the way I wanted to. I went back to school, obtained my ASN, BSN, and am currently working on my MSN.

My motivation has always been my patients. I have cared for adult congenital heart patients for the last 16 years. I have learned so much about strength, resiliency, fear, anger, and love from my patients. It is a privilege to be allowed into their lives and this keeps me motivated to provide the best possible nursing care to them!!

How much the salary is effective on being a good nurse?

Is it the main exciting factor in a good nursing care?

No book can teach you how to cry with a patient. No professor can teach you how to find dignity in giving someone a bed bath so in my perspective, humanity only is the true motivation .

I feel motivated by knowing that I helped people. This is a very rewarding aspect of nursing. I also am motivated when working with competent and quality health care professionals. Working with incompetent people is very challenging.

The biggest motivation at nursing is 'to love human'. I worked as a geriatric department nurse, to see the lights on my old patients' eyes was the big happiness for me. After 10 years, all of them are dead but still I cannot forget their eyes..

Knowing that one person can make a difference in someone else's (patient) is my motivation as it drives me to do my best with each and every person I may encounter as a nurse.

High demand, good pay, multiple specialties to work in, the ability to move forward with the career (i.e. nurse practitioner, administration) and the feeling of making a difference may be the factors of self- motivation in nursing?
