The problem with concentrating solar power is the high maintenance and cost, I am looking for a cheaper system, I will be trying the distiller with solar water heater, but I am not sure about the efficiency...

It is good idea  of using solar water heater in which the input energy is solar energy and water gets heated  and becomes vapor, which can be condensed to get purified  water. There are some constraints  in this system, as solar energy or solar heat flux depends on size of the container or water heater. Hence capcity or size of the container  is limited.  This is slow process as area of the  heat transfer is reduced compared with conventional method of using solar energy by means of collectos. As efficiency of this system is very low as it depends on area of heat transfer,  Practical problems are there however suggestion of using solar water heater to get pure water  is apprecialed.   

There is a system invented by Gabriele Diamanti who can purify 5L of water per day under the influence of the sun:

Quantity of water, which gets purnifed through solar water heater is very less hardly 5L/day as reviealed by Dr. Gino Olive.    

There are two types of solar stills:

1.The passive solar still (simple basin solar still) this is the cheapest one but with low daily production (around 3L/m2/day). Many researchers studied the parameters affecting the performance of these simple basins solar stills

2.The active solar still: In this type of solar stills an additional collectors or condensers are used to enhance the productivity. The productivity of this type is better than the simple basin solar still but also the cost is more. You can see these publication on the active solar still :
