If a fixed bed column is used to adsorb a number of heavy metals in one sample at the same time , when determining the optimum adsorption conditions mathematically, is it necessary to determine the breakthrough curve of each metal to investigate the operation and the dynamic response of the system? Can we use mean value or represent it with only one metal ?
I think that one should start with formulating the objective function and defining the optimization parameters .

I want to apply (Thomas model) to adsorption of several metals at the same time and this would be occurred at different flow rate, influent concentration and bed depth to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the characteristic parameters of the column which is useful for process design. should I apply it for each metal alone and repeat that for each metal or there is another easier way?

So you think more about process simulation than optimization. Of course, by simulating the process under various conditions, you can get closer to the optimum.
