The first criteria is: the solvent can not dissolve the crystal and is miscible with the liquid phase of the system. Some partially non solvent when mixed present a higher solubility of the product. Also if you intend to recover the solvent, the mixture has be be easily distillated
The best solvant(substrat) will dissolve the product and will be very miscible with an other solvant (non-solvent). TRhe non-solvent does not dissolve the principal product.
The solvent that you chose must be soluble in your reaction solvent and it must be of low polarity, and your reaction product must be insoluble in chosen solvent usually they use diethyl ether , hexane, or petroleum ether....you will add one of this solvents drop by drop to your reaction mixture till it become tribute then put the mixture in fridge.
