Thank you Rajeev and Rozaia! I will look into those articles now. In particular i am interested in the hybrid version of data collection for ethnographic research, where there may be face to face opportunities to interact but where technology provides a continuity throughout time

When I completed my dissertation on technology acceptance of online social media in 2008, I used Ethnograph 5.0, which was touted as the most frequently used application for qualitative analysis of social data. It was pretty simple, allowing one to find segments and track occurrences of words. It was not, and did not pretend to be a concordance type of program, Explicitly able to be used for keyword-in-context techniques, although the data may be coded in such a way as to facilitate that kind of work. As it was, I was able to use it to track numbers of occurrences for the qualitative part of my analysis. When you discuss technology in the context you suggest, however, using technology to interact and maintain contact, the researcher must be careful in defining the scope of the research, so that the researcher and/or technology don't become part of the research by driving interactions and becoming part of the culture...
