How can sludge cake (Heavy metals loaded nanocomposite/ adsorbent) be disposed off? Are there any ways to use this sludge cake for economic purpose/ value?? The nanocomposite is metal oxide modified biopolymer explored for the removal of toxic heavy metals. The heavy metals are Pb, Cd, Ni and Cu. The concentration of these heavy metals are 10-15 ppm.

I operated a waste treatment facility for a metal plating/finishing shop and routinely generated TONS of sludge cake and always wondered if there were more recovery options.
I worked at a metal finishing shop- I think the problem is that generally the waste treatment takes place on a mixed waste stream. The cost of separating and purifying the metals following desorbtion would probably be cost prohibitive.
Having said that, I always thought the best approach would be to capture specific metals from individual processes, i.e. nickel from electroless nickel, i.e. make each process as closed loop as possible. This also would require quite a bit of up-front investment which might be prohibitive.
