I am trying to make the network a bit slow by simulating background traffic. For now I am just sending some extra frames from one host to other but I think that is not correct. Can anyone guide me what is the correct way to simulate background traffic in OMNET with INET framework in the ethernet example? Thank you very much in advance.

you need to include additional sources, the node admits several independent sources, you can, for example, include several UDP aditional sources that will generate traffic with random destination. Like the traffic is UDP you don't need to create the receivers for these sources, if no available source is in the destination the packet will be deleted.
Thank you for the answer. Do you know how can I add UDP sources in an INET project? Is it pre available in INET framework or have to download from external sources?

for example, you can see in the examples/rip/dynamictest two couple of nodes that generate UDP traffic.
