I wish to compare the incidences of social interaction of two scenarios with 2 children with autism spectrum condition. How would I go about measuring their social interaction? Is there a scale that I can use or a form that breaks it down. Thanks for any help.
There are many kinds of social behavior. The VB-MAPP is a complete scale and evaluate social skills and other behaviors associated as listening,make a wish, following instructions and barriers for this behaviors. Worth knowing!
Yes, very correct - they are many expressions of social behaviors - rather than kind of social behaviors. It comes to back to "how" we choose to measure it - this should be clearly operationalized - and then developmental milestones/age.... and the severity of problem should be accounted for - before we can explore a type of measurement scale - in other words we might need to validate a measure before using it
I intend to observe children in two scenarios- a music therapy session compared with a play session. Ideally i wish to show that music therapy shows a higher rate of social initiation compared to play.

I have been exploring the best model of measuring social behaviours and fully agree that a measure needs to be fully validated before its use. I intend to trial my proposed method to ensure that it fits with the children I am working with and if not adapt it so that it is. Thank you for your thoughts here- this may be an area I need to further explore within my research.
You might like to consider behavioural observations - define what "social initiations" you are looking out for, code for frequency and duration. Check out Bauminger (2002, 2003)'s coding template.
