How can oil and gas operators and service companies get better at production monitoring in a cheaper and more efficient manner?

There is a need to accurately monitor production from heterogeneous reservoirs at the necessary scale in order to understand which vertical and lateral zones produce over time. At this time, one typically runs multiple gauges for this purpose. However, these can be unreliable and are expensive. Sub-sea environments present a particular challenge as retrofitting gauges can be very difficult.

I am looking for any ideas in to how these problems can be addressed?

Also I welcome 'blue sky thinking'
