Can anyone please respond with direction / suggestion / thoughts regarding relevant publications / research relating to the impact mega-events (such as the Olympics, Football / Rugby World Cups etc) may have on housing / accommodation / homelessness etc.
Essentially, I'm looking to research the systems and strategies that event organisers could pursue to enable legacies that equate to sustainably accommodating the homeless.
The convening of major international events is becoming increasingly commonplace. While such events were comparatively rare some 30 years ago, we now live in a time of unprecedented mobility where people, products and events span the far corners of the world. As the frequency and size of international events are likely to increase in coming years, it is of paramount importance that steps are taken to appropriately guide the planning and development processes linked to the hosting of international events
Mega-events, commonly also termed ‘hallmark events’, are large-scale tourist events of limited duration, designed to generate attention and attract support (often in terms of public funding and private investment) in order to stimulate redevelopment. Mega-events frequently have a significant impact on the enjoyment of housing rights. Whether the event is a cultural event such as a World’s Fair or World Expo, a sporting event such as the World Cup or the Commonwealth Games, or a political gathering such as the IMF/World Bank Conferences.
The attached studies of mega-events show significant housing impacts no matter what the event, be it a cultural celebration, sporting occasion or a political gathering.
