I am using Endnote for references in articles. How can find or identify an article using the article number which appears in the unformatted reference e.g. #71, which I assume corresponds to a specific article in my database. Let say that the full entry looks like {May, 2003 #71}. Differently, having only the number #71 how can I find the article in my database?

that number refers to the record number in your database. You can hover over the in-text citation {May, 2003 #71} then hold down the control key and click on the text and the cursor in your document will jump to the start of that reference in your document's bibliography. Alternatively, in EndNote you can use the Search Panel and search the field "Record Number" "is" 71 in your database. If you need to do this regularly then consider editing the columns and what they display so your record numbers display next to each reference in the database All References view. By making this change to the columns you can look at your EndNote Library and from the left pane below "All References" you will see a file name of the document you are working on, for example Document1, when you click on the words Document1 it will show you only the references already added to the document, click on the column "Record Number" and it will sort by this field and you can easily identify #71 in the sequence. Yes that is it, Record number. The number appears in the main database and in the reference list of an article only after at least one update to any style and back. Thanks a lot.
