I too are facing the similar problem of salinity in the coastal best of Thar desert in India. Thus it is highly needed for us too to focus on options to work on utilisation of desaline water.. If they are discarded on the soil itself, it may further risks to increases the salinity level in that portion. I would like your suggestion on how the brine water so produced as an by product after filtration can be used?

In the absence of good quality water, there is no way to use brine water except by desalination. However, desalinized water is highly costly and can only be used for growing of costly crops in greenhouses. They claim that use of Nanotechnology filtration plant is about 30 lesser energy consuming and therefore comparatively lesser costly. In this project, we are doing experimentation on this aspects. Future results will tell the real story.
It is true the desalinization process is a costly venture and it is desirable to grow only very high value crops. However, my concern is utlization of by-product/left over materiel after desalination. How you are using/maintaining it?

Reverse osmosis has a theoretical power requirement that relates to osmotic pressure, no matter what type of filtering is done. One way to get the operating pressure that high is to let a pipe carry the dilute brine down to a lower elevation. In the separation a concentrated brine is produced. It can either be offered for industrial use, purified for general salt use, or injected into deep wells of petroleum fields where it causes residual petroleum crude product to float to the pumping stations. I have experience in petroleum fields where the concentrated brine was preferred because of higher density.
My branch is industrial crystallization and I know that there are some works using this technology. But I don t have experience with agriculture usage. But it is possible to to recover salts from membrane efluent,
@ Mr. Jerry , Its wonderful to know that the brine so prepared from the RO system can be used in petroleum industry. In agriculture system particularly in green house system, RO system is used but the leftover concentrated brine is discarded the way it should not be. If it is having scope to be utilized in petroleum industry, it can give additional benefit. Can you share some papers supporting this idea.
@ Mr. Silas recovering salts can give extra benefit, as transporting a crystalline powder is comparatively easier than transporting concentrated brine solution. However, both have their own benefits and advantages. We need to identify what can work best with respect to agriculture.
Have you considered evaporation solar or other for high value sea salt food processing?
There also is some benefit with some additional treatment to feed a Chlor Alkali plant if the volume is extremely high.
