First one, Can valves control the flow rate in a piping system ?
The answer is Yes. Globe valves are used to control the flow rate. Globe valves are like control valves, but require to be operated manually i.e. A globe valve with actuator becomes a Control Valve, though control valve has some additional parameters in designing it.
The second one is How we can do that ?
All valves have a “gate”, which throttles the flow. In case of Globe valve it is smooth throttling ( the operating wheel can be adjusted to control the flow rate i.e. to increase & decrease the throttling) and very effective. Gate valves are generally used for STOP & START operations. Check valve to contain reverse flow of process liquid. Ball valves are quarter turn valves, used where fire-safe design is required (quick opening & closing).
