I learned how to take subsamples with a magnetic stir bar, but I noticed iron particles stick to the bar, and I am having trouble finding a standard method to solve that problem. How can I take a subsample that I know will be uniform in iron content without using magnets?
Are you wanting to measure the mass of iron particles per unit of water, or the amount of dissolved iron in the water without the particles?
If you want to know how many particles, perhaps you can stir with an aeration system (e.g. air or nitrogen) bubbling from the bottom of the beaker. Or you could stir from the top with a device like a paint mixer or cake mixer, (obviously with a non-magnetic stirrer), or you could use a pump system to recirculate the water (again, without magnetic parts so the particles don't stick inside the impeller or whatnot).
If you are trying to remove the particles, then why not filter through pre-weighed filter paper and measure the water Fe concentration afterwards. You could then work out the mass of iron particles removed per litre, and the proportion of particulate Fe: dissolved Fe.
