There are numeruous numbers of tracking devices to do that. Actually they are called Transmiters. The transmitters can basically be devided into several different categories. Main categories are GPS-loggers, Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs, Satellite Transmitters), - Argos/GPS PTTs, GSM Transmitters, Radio Transmitters (VHF telemetry), Geolocation loggers (GLSs) and Compass-loggers or dead reckoning.
All the transmitters collect somekind of geolocation data but each type of transmitters has its own pros and cons. The decision what type of transmitter to use actually depends what kind of information you need. You should first what information to be recorded before defining what kind of transmitter you need. for example: - Location, - Weather information, altitude, fligth speed, behaviour, what else do you need?
Tracking devices have an effect on the tracked birds and it is our responsibility to take as many precautions as possible to reduce such potential effect. Do also consider Device attachment (where you are going to put the transmitter, on the head, at the back?), how many transmitter you wil use? It is recommended to start with pilot studies that allow assessing the required sample size. etc. there are a lof details...

There are many approaches to research of migratory movement. But it is dependent on finance, time for field work and analysis, your experiences. When the bird movement is right migration - long distance migration - then you have to consider GPS or ARGOS technology. But it is expensive - you will need some funding for your project.
We work in the Straits of Gibraltar counting and marking raptors. In the last five years we have trapped and ringed more than 2.000 black kites (Milvus migrans) and we have also worked with GPS-GSM devices (> 60 birds) with very good results.
Satellite telemetry, Geo-locator, or automated telemetry can be applied to study bird migration. I have used radio-telemetry to study movement pattern of landbird migrants at stopover site and the effects of weather condition on departure decisions. Ringing birds/banding data is always useful for migration study. What methods or devices are appropriate depending on your study question, study species, your time, and your funding.

To complete previous answers, depending on the species you are studying, you can deploy complementary data loggers on the same individuals. For seabirds, it is common to deploy GPS during the breeding season while seabirds are on the nest and when releasing the GPS to deploy a GLS recorder which you will be able to get back next breeding season. It will depend on the site fidelity of your bird. If it is possible, you can get both breeding and interbreeding movements (eg migration).
