I'm working with Respiratory syntactical virus mouse model. While recovering virus from naso-pharynx and lung I found huge amount of mucus in the samples which is really problematic for RNA extraction using column. Can anyone suggest me the way of getting rid of this problem. I was thinking about using 'Sputasol'. Has it any kind of inhibitory effect on RNA recovery or qPCR?

You can try using carbocisteine ( available from sigma), it has been used in cell culture at 0.005 mM to 10 mM final concentration, with 0.5 mM to 1 mM being most common.

It is soluble in McIlvaine’s buffer.

Thanks Sandhya. I've checked carbocisteine papers and seems its ok to use for my qPCR samples. But I forgot to mention that I'm gonna do plaque assay for those samples as well. Most probably for getting live viruses in cell line it is some what inhibitory.
