You can skip the usage of nitrous acid and generate nitric oxide (NO) gas and bubble in a solution of your compound.

Nitric oxide gas is generated from solid state reaction of sodium nitrite and some other solid (i forget now) but you can look it up.

You can think of reducing concentration of HNO2 to reduce its oxidizing effect.

I would maybe consider protecting your sulfonic acid unless you have seen examples of people doing diazotization with it unprotected.

Also off the top of my head I dont know anything that forms diazonium salt other than alkyl nitrites, nitrous acid, or nitric oxide gas as all of them eventually produce nitric oxide gas to form diazonium salt though.

you should try it though. Its probably the acid that is causing your decomposition, not the nitric oxide gas generated in situ.

Continue diazotization at -20 oC. Hope you may get the result (White Ppt). Else proceed with NH4NO3 and HCl.

How can i protect my sulfonic group and safely diazotized my compound without any tar conversion, suggestions on this.

my coupling partner is sodium phenoxide. which depronated first and then couples with this compound at alkaline PH.
