I need to quantify phosphorous in leaves;
usually to quantify other elements (like Ca, Na) we turn to ashes the leaves and analyze the acidic solution by ICP-OES or ICP-MS, but i've the suspect that by ashing (450°C) i have thermal decomposition and loss of phosphorous compounds.
What do you think about it?

X-ray fluorescence, possible even with imaging in plants without special preparation. Among my publications there is one with Dioscorea Balcanica, about 10 elements were analyzed.
All the alternatives are correct. If you have a microwave may be the best. With HNO3 and FAAS or ICP OES. For phosphorus, blue molibdate method, colorimetric is good, no atomic thecniques for P.
If you use dry ash, is also good and at the end some HF will be required, but complicate for further manipulation.Some times the silicates that are natural in plant material interfered with the determination.

ICP-MS for macroelements, is like shoot a fly with a bazooka :)
But if you have much money It is an option. Not for the poor ...;)
Why ash the samples at all? Digest in nitric acid and then do ICP-MS, as Renzo Tassinari said previously. (I do not use H2O2, only HNO3, heat for 4 hours until clear solution, then dilute and read in ICP-MS).
I agree with Mariela, there is no need for the MS. The main problem with plant material is to grind the dried leaves to achieve homogeneity. Microwave acid digestion with Aqua Regia and, if silica reminder occurs filtration, has to be made prior to ICP-OES determination of total phosphorus.
First dried the leaves in sunlight and then crush it, make ash in cucible heater or in furnace slowly. Then te ash powder dissove in apprpiate volume of Acidic solotion or aquaregia and then dilute it. Determine the elements with known standard methods.
Phosphorus can be a problem in ICPMS analysis as it is not very sensitive: at low concentrations of P in leaf material, the signal rapidly decreases to background leaving you with the impression that the leaves are deficient in P. ICPOES is a better option for P for a number of reasons. You may want to consider acid digestion too (see my paper attached).

You can do one digestion by acid attack using a mixture of HNO3 and HCLO4 (in a proportion of 7:1) and then using ICPMS analysis. It´s no need to ash the samples, you just have to dry and grind the leave samples.
