I am trying to model liquid sloshing inside a closed container with acceleration following a sine function. I am interested in finding the stress distribution in the container under earthquake.
You have to model the liquid by two masses: one rigidly attached and one sloshing. Search google for ”Housner sloshing model” and you will find papers on this!
I had a look at the Housner model. It is crude in the sense that it is lumped. Then again, it is nice to have analytical formulations available.
FE models can provide sloshing mode shapes for arbitrary tank shaped, e.g. as outlined here http://www.ata-e.com/downloads/software/Hydro_Users_Guide.pdf
