I am working on polishing abrasives. I need to do few characterizations ? which can provide the on time surface chemistry of substrate with polishing abrasive during optical polishing. I would also like to know the physics behind it.

May be in terms of heat of adsorption if adsorption is involved as an interglacial phenomenon.

You can try following parameters
1. Adsorption time (contact time)
2. Amount of adsorbate
3. Adsobent concentration
Of course you may try to fit to one of Adsorption isotherms

The best way is to measure X-ray or electron diffraction accomplished with photoluminescence. It will give both insights into the nature and the quality of surface improvements.
