I want to fabricate a biosensor with a bio-polymer coating on gold micro-electrodes. For better attachment of the bio-polymer on the gold electrode, as far as I know it is necessary to use a thiol-based material on the micro-electrodes. As far as I know there are several material that can be used for this purpose. I want to know is there any significant difference between materials such as 1-hexadecanethiol, 2- decanethiol and butanethiol for this application?

The hydrocarbon chain makes a big difference to how well the Self Assembled Monolayer will form. Generally short hydrocarbon chains, like butanethiol will form highly disordered monolayers, whereas longer ones, like 1-hexadecanethiol will form highly ordered ones because of the interactions between neighboring hydrocarbon chains. The length of time will also affect how well these layers form on the surface, with longer times (at least overnight) generally necessary to form the most compact monolayer.
