I'm do a lot of organizational work and much of it is focused on trying to create more space for inquiry as an approach to leadership (very much influenced by both narrative practices and Margaret Wheatley's distinction between hero and host leadership. Hi Bill, Thanks for your question. Leading through Inquiry is a course offered by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in which we support senior professionals and managers to do an inquiry that aims to enhance a change process in which they are already involved. Our assumption is that leaders are more effective in their work with professionals, when they create space for inquiry in their own actions and interactions with professionals. Schein's book Humble Inquiry is a source of inspiration here. We aim to go one step further by helping participants to design the inquiry in such a way that both the existing change process is enhanced AND a rule is developed for interactions in the future in the same work environment. We have framed this as the triple process structure of action research. One of the outputs of the inquiry can be interaction rules that prove to be helpful in improving the effectiveness of working together on tough change issues.
One example of this is my paper of 2014 about leadership dynamics in Research in Organizational Change and Development. You can download it from my page in ResearchGate. It is a case study of creating space for inquiry in the practice of managers in a Dutch multinational in Pharma and Food Ingredients. It is quite another world than a Family-Centered Service Center, but maybe you find it helpful.
